Rich Man Who Died & Went To Hell

Rich Man Who Died & Went To Hell

John Piper

Rich Man Who Died & Went To Hell— (Luke 16:19-31) is about a Bible Study by John Piper, called: "Preparing to Receive Christ: Hearing Moses & the Prophets". This is a very important Bible Study to help you to "Examine Your Faith" (2 Cor 13:5)!
  • Luke 16:19-30 Jesus said, “There was a certain Rich Man who was splendidly clothed in purple and fine linen and who lived each day in luxury. At his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus who was covered with sores..."
This Bible Study is about how: God uses Money as a Test of our Faithfulness to Him. If we Don't use Money in a way that shows that God is more PRECIOUS to us than Mere THINGS, then Luke 16:11 says there is NO Reason to think that We will EVER be Entrusted with the TRUE RICHES OF HEAVEN. The use of Money can either MAKE or BREAK our ETERNAL DESTINY! Then He talks about the Rich Man who Died and went to Hell. This is a very important Warning to us.

Rich Man Who Went to Hell - Luke 16:19-31 - Scripture

  • Luke 16:19-31 (NASB) “Now there was a rich man, and he habitually dressed in purple and fine linen, joyously living in splendor every day. 20) And a poor man named Lazarus was laid at his gate, covered with sores, 21) and longing to be fed with the crumbs which were falling from the rich man’s table; besides, even the dogs were coming and licking his sores. 22) Now the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham’s bosom; and the rich man also died and was buried. 23) In Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and saw Abraham far away and Lazarus in his bosom. 24) And he cried out and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus so that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue, for I am in agony in this flame.’ 25) But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that during your life you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus bad things; but now he is being comforted here, and you are in agony. 26) And besides all this, between us and you there is a great chasm fixed, so that those who wish to come over from here to you will not be able, and that none may cross over from there to us.’ 27) And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, that you send him to my father’s house— 28) for I have five brothers—in order that he may warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’ 29) But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.’ 30) But he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent!’ 31) But he said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.’”
Jesus says if are Not Trustworthy About Worldly Wealth, You Will NOT Be Trusted With Eternal Riches!
  • Luke 16:10-13 (NASB) Jesus says, “He who is faithful in a very little thing is faithful also in much; and he who is unrighteous in a very little thing is unrighteous also in much. 11“Therefore if you have not been faithful in the use of unrighteous wealth, who will entrust the true riches to you? 12“And if you have not been faithful in the use of that which is another’s, who will give you that which is your own? 13“No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.”
  • Luke 16:19-31 Jesus said, “There was a certain Rich Man who was splendidly clothed in purple and fine linen and who lived each day in luxury. At his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus who was covered with sores..."
Right before Jesus tells us the Story about the Rich Man who went to Hell, He tells the Pharisees another Story about a Rich Man (Luke 16:1-14)...which than lead us into the following statements below. Then Jesus will tell us the tragic story about the Rich Man who died and went to Hell (Luke 16:19-31).

Preparing to Receive Christ: Hearing Moses & the Prophets

By John Piper
We continue with our advent question: What must happen for our hearts to be prepared to receive Christ for who he really is? We have given two parts to the answer so far.

Something More Than Flesh and Blood

From Matthew 16:17 we saw that something more than flesh and blood is required in order for us to recognize and receive Christ for who he really is. When Peter broke through to the insight that Jesus was the Messiah and the Son of the living God, Jesus said, "Blessed are you Simon Barjona, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven." In order to receive Christ for who he really is, God the Father must reveal to us the truth and beauty of the Son.

Something Must Happen to Our Wills

From John 7:17 we saw that in order to know the truth of Christ's teaching so that we can receive him for who he really is, something has to happen to our wills so that we will the will of God: "If anyone's will is to do God's will he shall know whether the teaching is from God or whether I am speaking from myself."
Specifically, our will has to be freed from its passion to seek the praise and approval of men. Instead we have to have a will that delights in the glory of God. This is implied in John 5:44, "How can you believe, who receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?" To recognize and receive Jesus for who he really is, we have to will to do the will of God, namely, pursue the glory of God above all other pleasures in our life.
