Who Is Your Master and Whom Do You Serve?

When you think of service and loyalty in life, everyone serves someone, right? We all are serving or building something. People serve their family, spouse, kids, school, their job and so forth. If you don’t think you’re serving someone, you are building something. Maybe you’re not building your own empire, but you’re building someone else’s dream, company, brand or service.

There are times and seasons when we need to serve in the system, in the sense that we obviously need to work and pay our bills, but we serve a greater master and His name is Jesus. Do you consider Jesus as Lord? Do you serve God or do you just work for money? Do you aim for success or do you aim for spiritual growth? Where is your eye aiming? Do you have an earthly or eternal goal in mind?

Jesus says in the Holy Word of God:

No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. (Matthew 6:24)

Famous singer-songwriter and entertainer Bob Dylan wrote a song about how everyone has to serve somebody. Even he knows you can’t serve two masters. Here are some lyrics to his popular song “Gotta Serve Somebody”:

“But you’re gonna have to serve somebody, yes indeed

You’re gonna have to serve somebody,

It may be the devil or it may be the Lord

But you’re gonna have to serve somebody.”

What is the definition of a “master”? A master is someone who is in authority, who has supremacy, who is in the place of Kingship or honor. A master is one who can control, regulate and has power. A master is a ruler, who is a Lord, someone who is to be obeyed or honored. Is Jesus your master and Lord? Or do you know of Him? Do you know Christ personally? God is our Father, our King, our Lord. God gave Jesus the supremacy of all things as the head of the body of Christ (Colossians 1), and the power by shedding His blood on the cross for our sins so that we may have the gift of eternal life (Romans 3:25).

The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. (1 Colossians 1:15-18)

We are made alive in Christ because He was the lamb who was slain for our sins. We therefore honor and listen to our shepherd’s voice (John 10) because He has made the way into the holy of holies to our Father in heaven (Hebrews 10:19). Without the access of the son (Jesus), there is no access to the Father. This same rule applies in royalty. The heir to the throne is the son of the King. Jesus is the King. He sits on the throne and was raised at the right hand of the Father.

Jesus said, “He who has seen Me has seen the Father…”  (John 14:9)

“I and the Father are one.” (John 10:30)

Is He your master or just some nice man in your mind? Jesus is either Lord (master, King, the Messiah, the Son of God as prophesied), a liar or a lunatic. Who do you say Jesus is? I say Jesus is my Lord, my shepherd, my best friend, my leader, my Savior, my counselor, my God, my source, my comfort, my treasure and so much more. Ask Jesus into your heart today. Read the sinner’s prayer below. Jesus loves you. God sent His son to die for your sins on a cross. The wages of sin is death.

“The great British writer C. S. Lewis explained in his well-known book Mere Christianity, ‘A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher; he’d either be a lunatic—on a level with a man who says he’s a poached egg—or else he’d be the devil of hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God; or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come up with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.’ So Jesus was either a madman, a liar, a myth or He really was—and is—the Son of God.”

Sin separates us from God, but faith in Jesus (the Good Shepherd, God incarnate, Emmanuel) gives us salvation through the sacrifice that was made on the cross. In the Jewish customs, even in the Old Testament in the Bible before Jesus was born (New Testament), there had to be shedding of animals’ blood (the life is in our blood; without blood, there is no life), or the remission of sin to take place (Leviticus 17:11).

We can’t expect to get to eternity and have lived a life of selfishness and not sharing the Gospel (the good news of Jesus and the free gift of salvation), and expect to spend eternity with the God we never served, spent time with or talked to (prayed to). Would you go to someone’s home and knock on their door and ask to come inside if you never spent time with them? They would say, “I don’t know you.” (Luke 13:27, Matthew 7:23)

Just imagine going to the Queen’s palace in London and not bringing a gift or being reverent. There has to be a sacrifice for the injustices on the earth. The only way is through repentance (turning away from sin and acknowledging that Jesus is Lord, the awaited Son of God, the Messiah and King), and by reading the Word, praying and being born again by the Holy Spirit.

He said to them, “Make every effort to enter through the narrow door, because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to. Once the owner of the house gets up and closes the door, you will stand outside knocking and pleading, ‘Sir, open the door for us.’ But he will answer, ‘I don’t know you or where you come from.’“ (Luke 13:24-25)

No one is perfect, so don’t look to people as your primary leader or Lord. Pastors and leaders are people—they can lead you, guide you, but they are not God. You can’t have multiple masters or idols. There are even so-called Christians or believers who don’t live out their faith because of bondage and their master is the flesh or the temptations of the world. Don’t try to impress people; impress God. Serve God, honor Him with your life, because it is WORTH it.

The truth is no one knows when they are passing to eternity, and we all need to remind ourselves that God is Lord and that Jesus Christ is the King of Kings, amen?

Do you feel distracted, trapped, torn, confused, hurt, broken, helpless, unloved, worthless? Jesus calls you worth it because He died for YOU. You were worth the price, the pain, the heavy cross that our Lord carried. He loves you. Let me tell you, YOU CAN BE FREE. You may ask, “What do I need to do?” Surrender to God, humble yourself and genuinely cry out to Him. We NEED God. We cannot live this life on our own strength. We need the help of the Holy Spirit who comes into our hearts and lives when we become believers and are baptized into the Kingdom of God by the Spirit. You must be born again spiritually to understand fully the work God wants to do in your life. (Read John 3 in the Bible to learn more.)

God will show you, walk with you and speak to you if you listen, ask and keep petitioning to Him. God loves you so very much and wants to have a relationship with you! You can’t earn your way into a relationship; it is ALREADY done! Jesus said, “It is finished”—over 2,000 years ago! Just start seeking a relationship with God through Jesus (the Word), and God will reveal Himself to you.

Paul (a follower and disciple of Jesus) explains in Colossians:

Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation… (Colossians 1:21-23)

God can do this and can make your life new. No, it won’t be perfect, but it is the best life you can live! God is our master and Lord, not in a negative way like a slavery type of way, but in the sense that we want to honor, give, serve, love, sacrifice for God’s Kingdom and for Christ’s cause because the Gospel needs to be shared with the whole world that NOTHING you do through religion can save you, only Jesus. Jesus paid it all on Calvary for you and me. We just need to believe, obey and do the will of the Father, amen?
